In that case, I maintain that or sometimes upgrade them to a poly filter, but only within that since I know the coils will already be dirty if they are using fiberglass filters. Note that many furnaces cannot handle pleated filters, but not everyone up North has a furnace. They might have a heat pump that allows them to use almost anything, depending on whether the unit has a variable-speed fan and whether they maintain the coil. In hotter climates, people run their units constantly, necessitating more frequent filter changes.
